Day 2 in the Forgotten Realms: A New Dawn, A New Character

After our previous session, we came to a minor problem (IRL): We did not connect with the prebuilt characters. Under Robert's supervision (sort of), me and Jeff decided to create our own characters. After fumbling a bit, trying to explain how I would play a Half-Dragon and Jeff a Drow (unsuccessfully), we decided to be kinda normal: I went with the cliché Wizard High-Elf, and Jeff (after rolling 3x17!!!!) opted for a Human Bard (instead of Half-Elf Bard).

Jin Gitaxias (yes, I stole the Praetor's name from Magic: The Gathering) is a High-Elf Wizard who seeks the knowledge of ancestral artificers. He has a fascination for trinkets and inanimate spell-woven objects, so much that he has a disdain for actual people (I need to put the 6 I rolled into something, it went into Charisma). Here is what I came up with:
Jin Gitaxias lived until the age of 120 in his village hidden in the trees (believe it!), and was always interested on the crafting of jewellery, weapons, trinkets, armors, and anything that artificers can produce by changing inorganic materials and weaving spells into it. When he was on the ending of his childhood (around 99 years old) Edrik Brunnor, a master dwarf artificer, visited his village and taught him for 10 years. He is very attached to Edrik Brunnor, and will pretty much do anything he wants. Edrik was so impressed that suggested that Jin should join the Jeweler's Guild, and that is what led him out of his village, although he is still very attached to the people who grew up with him in the village.
Too cliché? Maybe. But here is what Jeff came up with for Locke, his OP Bard:
Grew up on a coast, raised by an old sage who removed himself from society to study and perfect his skills in music, arts, and magic.
And when I say OP, I mean this:
which is ok, saves our asses more than once.

Robert was still playing as a NPC cleric, or the game would be too droll.
So, as a price to change characters though, Robert decided that we failed our first mission, meaning that the cargo got stolen / destroyed and Rockseeker was killed (together with our old characters). No gold, no XP. Whatever, a new dawn rose.

Day 1 in the Forgotten Realms: When die rolls lose you the cargo

My first impression of the game is that it is very similar to Vampire (or should I say that Vampire is very similar to D&D? Probably), which gave me a feel of ease instead of intimidation against the game mechanics. The whole spell slot / spell prepared concept was the most hard to grasp, and I am sure I commited some mistakes while casting spells and such.
Anyways, I tried to roleplay the Wizard the best I could, being antisocial and inquisitive to the extreme, which seemed to annoy Jeff a bit, but who cares?
We started the game at the famous city of Neverwinter (Neverwinter Nights; Bauldur's Gate), and since both of us had reasons of our own to venture towards Phandalin (my character needed to meet someone there, Jeff's character needed money, and Rob's character had family business to attend), we all accepted Rockseeker's offer to scout and protect him on the road.
In our first encounter with goblins in the road to Phandalin, we were ambushed. Now, here is where I learned how strong the Sleep spell is. We were attacked by 4 goblins, I managed to sleep the 2 meele so they would not reach us, Jeff used his bow skills to damage the ranged goblins, and I used Magic Missile. Yes, I realize I was using my spells very losily, but you know, newbies.
After defeating the goblins, we decided that the main road was not safe anymore, and followed through a side road. The rogue scouted ahead while we took a short rest (I needed to regain some spell slots). He came back and reported that the road was clear, once we followed, we actually fell (with the wagon and all) through a "trap" on the road, losing cargo and animals.

A New Campaign begins!

Hello Adventurers,
This blog was created to report on my very small group experience playing Dungeons & Dragons 5ed.
Robert is our DM, he is experienced with D&D and was very excited with the new 5ed, and decided to start a campaign for me (Beto) and Jeff. Neither of us have ever played D&D before. I played Vampire: The Masquerade yeeeeeears ago, but that was it.

We started with the Starter Set. We first tried our hands on the initial adventure. I select the Mage Wizard pre-built that comes with it, Jeff was the Rogue, and Robert was playing as an NPC and selected the Dwarf Cleric, in order for us not to die right away without a tank/ healer.
